Thanksgiving: Travel, Food Coma, and the Four-Day Marathon

The flight in, the 3,000-calorie table, the leftovers campaign, the flight out — Thanksgiving is a four-day logistics event wearing a holiday's clothes. The survival-and-recovery plan.

The four-day table

2:40 PM, Thanksgiving Day, a living room in Wellington. A man we'll call Doug — the Publix aisle Doug; the county's archetypes celebrate together — is entering the annual post-feast state his family calls "the recline of Doug." Plate count: technically one, structurally three. Wine: two glasses. Cognitive status: buffering. From the couch, pre-nap, he delivers the holiday's most repeated piece of folk science to no one in particular: "It's the tryptophan. The turkey has tryptophan." Doug. Buddy. We need to talk about the bird's legal defense.

Acquitting the turkey

The tryptophan theory is America's favorite wrong answer: turkey's tryptophan content is ordinary — comparable to chicken, which has never put anyone in a recliner. The 2:40 collapse is the meal's architecture: a 3,000-plus-calorie bolus demanding a massive blood-flow diversion to digestion; a carbohydrate load — stuffing, potatoes, pie — running the spike-crash physics at holiday scale; and the wine assisting. You'd nap after that meal if it were tofu. The verdict matters because the fix targets the real mechanism: the one-plate rule (seconds of the two favorites, not the full survey) and the after-dinner walk — the best-evidenced glucose-flattener in the literature, twenty minutes that halve the crash, disguised as a family tradition.

The turkey is innocent. The portion architecture did it — with the stuffing as accomplice and the wine driving the getaway recliner.

The other three days

The feast is only Thursday; the holiday is a four-day event with three other bills. The travel legs: the year's most compressed window — packed airports, long highways, guest-bed sleep — running the standard travel program against both ends, with the return landing directly on Monday's doorstep. The leftovers campaign: Friday through Sunday's grazing runs the feast's physics at lower amplitude on repeat. The host's marathon — the unmeasured one: days of prep, a week of hosting adrenaline, cooking shifts eaten standing, and the signature crash when the last guest leaves and the adrenaline withdraws with them — hosts routinely name the Sunday after as their year's most exhausted day, which the December version then reruns at triple length.

The Sunday reset

The protocol that hands December a functional human: hydration run deliberately against the weekend's travel and wine; a real walk daily through the leftovers campaign; the Sunday evening early-night, guarded; and — the tradition quietly spreading through the county's host households — the Sunday-after session: fluids, B vitamins, the four-day account settled on the couch while the football plays, before Monday arrives to collect and December begins its own long campaign toward January 1st.

Doug, December 1st

This year's edition ran the system: one plate (witnessed, disputed, upheld on review), the walk (renamed "the acquittal stroll"), host-duty hydration for his wife's cooking marathon, and the Sunday couple's session. Monday arrived to find both Dougs upright. His revised holiday science, delivered at the office: "Turns out the bird was framed. It's a portions-and-logistics event. Manage it like one and you get December for free."

FAQ

Good questions.

Is the turkey's tryptophan really what causes the food coma?

Mostly myth: turkey's tryptophan content is ordinary (chicken has comparable levels). The 2 PM collapse is the meal's SIZE — a 3,000+ calorie bolus diverts massive blood flow to digestion, the carb load spikes-then-crashes blood sugar, and the wine assists. You'd sleep after that meal if it were tofu.

Why does Thanksgiving travel hit harder than regular trips?

It's the year's most compressed travel window: packed airports and highways (stress and long days), family logistics on both ends, disrupted sleep in guest beds, and the return leg landing directly against Monday. The travel fatigue and the feast fatigue compound — most people run both.

What's the host's version of Thanksgiving depletion?

The unmeasured marathon: days of prep, hosting adrenaline running the week, on-your-feet cooking shifts, feeding a crowd while grazing instead of eating, and the post-guest crash when the adrenaline withdraws. Hosts routinely report the Sunday after as their year's most exhausted day.

What's the four-day protocol?

Damage-limitation, not denial: one plate rule at the feast (seconds of the favorites, not everything), a walk after the big meal (the best-evidenced glucose-flattener there is), hydration against travel and wine, protected sleep where possible, and a genuine Sunday reset — fluids, movement, early night — before Monday collects.
